5 great teams that DIDN'T win football’s championship trophy

This year Green Bay was favoured to win it all after going 15-1 during the regular season. However, they flamed out when they lost to New York 37-20 in their opening play-off game.  Here are five great American Professional Football teams that also failed to win the championship.

  1. 1. 2007 New England-This team was loaded. ‘Captain America’ Tom Brady was their quarterback. They had arguably the league’s best wide receiver in Randy Moss. Brady set a record for touchdown passes in a season with 50, and Moss set a record for touchdown receptions with 22. However, they lost when New York’s backup wide receiver David Tyree caught a pass off his helmet and Eli Manning threw a touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress for a 17-14 win. New England is the only team other than the 1972 Miami team to go undefeated during the regular season.
  2. 1968 Baltimore- The team went 13-1 during the regular season. They were coached by legend Don Shula. Baltimore’s backup quarterback Earl Morrall was named league MVP.  They went into the championship game as 18 point favorites but Joe Namath and co. beat them 16-7 for one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports.
  3. 1998 Minnesota- The first team in football history to win 15 games during the regular season and not even make it to the championship game.  The team set a record for points scored in a season with 556 that was later broken by New England in 2007. Led by quarterback Randall Cunningham, receivers Cris Carter and Randy Moss, and running back Robert Smith, the team was explosive. However, they lost in playoffs to Atlanta 30-27.
  4. 1990 Buffalo- Led by Hall of Famers Jim Kelley and Thurman Thomas, this team was extremely talented. Buffalo won 13 games that season and led the league in offensive touchdowns with 48. Defensive end Bruce Smith had 19 sacks. However, they lost the championship game to New York 20-19 when Buffalo missed a key field goal in the fourth quarter. The words ‘wide right’ still haunt Buffalo to this day.
  5. 2001 St. Louis- With players such as quarterback Kurt Warner, running back Marshall Faulk, and wide receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, this team had one of the most potent offences in league history. It was so effective that the team earned the nickname ‘The Greatest Show on Turf.’ However, New England’s Tom Brady led a last-minute charge down the field, and Adam Vinatieri kicked a field goal in the closing seconds for a 20-17 win.
